This past offseason, Odell Beckham Jr. was all set to make his triumphant comeback to New York with the Jets.
But OBJ was forced to reconsider as the Baltimore Ravens head management made a daring move.
OBJ said on “The Punch Line Podcast,” “I think in my heart like I was set to go back to New York and be a Jet.” “Long story short, I recall over the weekend receiving a call that said something like, ‘Hey, this is the Ravens, this is our offer, what is it going to take for you to not take that visit [with the Jets]?’ They replied, “Just know that the offer is off the table if you do get on that plane.”
“In my heart, I was set to go back to New York and be a Jet” – OBJ.
The contract offer consisted of a $15 million one-year agreement with an additional $3 million in incentives. OBJ missed his planned visit to the Jets facility and signed with the Ravens instead because he thought it was too good to pass up.
OBJ Describes How Near Signing With The Jets Was
“You are aware of the moment when God wants you to enter the door that is intended for you. Not the door you’ve been dying to open. My entire being yearned to return to New York, to be able to take advantage of marketing opportunities, the Jets, and—gasp!—even having my number selected, Beckham remarked. “Hey, let me buy that off you,” I’m DMing the punter, or whoever it was at the time. This is where I’m heading, like I’m setting stones.”
What then went wrong?
The Jets “kind of slow-played the [official contract] offer,” according to OBJ.
They almost seemed to assume that they were the greatest team and that it would be an honour for me to play for them. Go where you’re appreciated, not tolerated, is the quote that comes to mind, in my opinion,” Beckham went on.
As the top seed in the AFC, the Ravens are among the favourites to win the Super Bowl after acquiring OBJ.
On social media, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reaffirmed that OBJ “was very close to signing with the Jets” during the previous summer. Maybe they should try again for him in the following off-season?
Rosenblatt continued, “Aaron Rodgers and Beckham are friends and wanted to play together.” I’m sure they would like to play together in 2024 if they desired to last year.
It was reported at the time that Odell Beckham was very close to signing with the Jets, but the Ravens made a larger offer that the Jets refused to match.
The #Jets “thought that they were the best team,” according to Beckham, and it “would be a joy for me to be…
The Jets must make other moves as well, even if they want to reenter the Beckham market in 2024.
Since 2019, OBJ has not had a 1,000-yard campaign. He has the third-fewest receptions in his NFL career in the season just ended. In 2023, Beckham caught 35 passes for 565 receiving yards and three touchdowns while playing for Baltimore.
OBJ had glimpses of his old self towards the conclusion of the season. The Jets must, nevertheless, prepare for the worst and hold out hope.
Another experienced wide receiver should be teamed with a prospective Beckham addition. In order to give Aaron Rodgers plenty of offensive weapons and injury insurance for the upcoming season, the Jets must
